Featured Wedding : Lisa + Rob

April is almost here and I am getting excited as I see all the tulips and flowers starting to bloom in our garden here at The Canterbury Place! I am getting so excited for the spring and summer months (wedding season is soon upon us!), so I thought it would be a perfect time for me to show off an amazing wedding we hosted here last April for and equally amazing couple Rob and Lisa! Like many couples these days, they lived out of town so most of the planning was done via email and phone conversations. This can sometimes add an extra challenge, but their wedding proves that with a great team, you can plan a gorgeous wedding and still have fun doing it! I think Lisa says it best... "I wanted to let you know what a wonderful experience we had at Canterbury Place. Planning a wedding from out of state - while fun - was pretty stressful, but you made it easy. Everything was absolutely beautiful and our friends said they have never been to a more fun and stunning wedding. Please tell everyone there thank you for making our day so special!" I had such so much FUN planning with Lisa (plus I have to mention how incredibly organized she was) so hearing her words is like icing on the cake! Speaking of cake, make sure to check out their incredible wedding cake made by Julie Hill with Layers (possibly one of my favorites of all time)....

Lisa's wedding color were an eggplant purple, Raisin, plum and leaf green. I completely love monochromatic color schemes like this, and as you can tell, it turned out amazing!

Lisa personalized her bouquet by adding 2 picture charms of her belated mother and step-mother. It truly was beautiful and special!

What can I say... this 4 tiered, damask print cake was to die for!

I also just want to mention that Rob serves in the military and right after their spring reception, got deployed to Iraq. It's incredible to me the sacrifices like couples like this make for our country so I want to give an extra big THANK YOU to Rob and Lisa!

Featured Wedding: Jenna + Addison

Every one in a while a wedding comes along that is so thought out, unique and special it will never be forgotten in Canterbury History... and this is definitely one of those weddings! Every detail was carefully planned by the couple and I couldn't have been happier with how it all turned out!

To give you an inside scoop about how the couple met....
Addison and Jenna met on their missions in Birmingham, Alabama. They served in the same area for 6 months and became really good friends. She got home a month after he did and then her mom invited him to her homecoming on Facebook (don't you love the new erra of realtionships stemming from Facebook? It's amazing). He luckily showed up and the rest is history!

They were engaged May 7th 2010 and married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 5th 2010.
In her own words "It was an amazing day! The Canterbury was a perfect place for the ring ceremony and a great reception! I loved how we could have the ring ceremony outside and the reception inside! There was so much space for dancing and eating, including separate rooms! It was also nice to have a wedding planner to make sure that it was all planned! The people at Canterbury were so great to work with and they'd let you do just about anything you wanted! Everything turned out perfect! "

Thanks Jenna for all the kind words! I too am thrilled at how amazing all of it turned out and I am even more excited to finally show off these incredible pictures shot by Morgan Trinker Photography. I am completely in love with her style and it confirms what I tell all of my brides.... make it a priority to find a good photographer who will document your wedding day perfectly. It's worth it!

One of my favorite details were these tissue poms, Bird cages, and topiary balls that we hung from the ceiling. She had the theme of birds incorporated into the decor all over the building. FUN!

I can't get over how beautiful this shot is! Reminds me of Italy...

Jenna's Dad hand built a photo booth that hung these picture frames so guests could get pictures the moment they walked in the door. Can you say Creative and Cute!

Featured Wedding: Kelsey + Johnny

I am so excited to show off pics of one of our very own staff members daughter, Kelsey Parker who got married last fall to Johnny. They were truly one of the sweetest and easiest couples to plan with (and it always helps when you have a Mom who is a professional Wedding Hostess) and I am so excited to share their truly special love story....

Kelsey and Johnny met in the Deaf Studies program at UVU and a few weeks later, left to spend the summer in Ghana, West Africa, teaching in different towns and in schools for the Deaf. They dated the next school year and in May, headed once more to Ghana and taught again, in different towns. They were able to see each other a few weekends, and in July, Johnny completely surprised Kelsey by proposing in one of their favorite quiet spots! He gave her a temporary ring to wear in Africa, and presented her with the real thing in the airport when they arrived home. They both cherish the beautiful, brown, playful, Deaf children of Ghana and this May...you guessed it, will return, but this time, in the same town!

Kelsey & johnny's wedding was such a beautiful fall wedding with red, yellow and brown as her colors. Even the trees outside matched perfectly!

As you can tell from this picture, Sunflowers were the main flower of the wedding which was adorable. They even tied mini sunflowers on all the sashes which was such a great way to add a pop to all the chairs!

I LOVE this combo of lanterns and Poms. They feel so modern and fresh and were such a great way to add a splash of wedding colors to the middle of the room.

We decided to also hang poms from the cake arch which, combined with this cute mini brownie diplay (instead of cake), really had a unique and fun look!

I can't say enough good things about the Florals which were done by Stacie Hardy with LaBelle Fleur! She never ceases to amaze us with all her uniqiue designs and her vision is truly magnificent!

Kelsey and Johnny are now both freelance interpreters for the Deaf, will finish at UVU in 2012 and head off to graduate school where Johnny plans to earn a masters degree in Occupational Therapy. They are such an incredible and inspiring couple to me and I wish them all the HAPPINESS in the world as they begin their new lives together!

Featured Wedding: Piper + John

I am so excited to finally blog a wedding we had here at The Canterbury Place last December. They were such an amazing couple to plan with so I am also excited to share their Piper & john's special love story....

It all started in High School (which I have a soft spot for since I married my high school sweetheart).... She was a sophomore while he was a senior and they started dating the summer he graduated while they were up in Yellow Stone celebrating the 4th of July. John asked her out and she initially said yes, but then she had a change of heart because she didn't want to be in relationship with a guy she knew nothing about (I don't blame her). So after that, they stayed up until 6 am asking questions and getting to know each other. After that, they didn't spend a day apart! It didn't take long after that until they officially became a couple while enjoying milkshakes (sweet and yummy). After 5 years of dating, John finally proposed to Piper in front of the Belagio Hotel in Vegas on her 21st birthday. How fitting to propose with a night of fireworks when it all started with a night of fireworks!

And their wedding ended up equally as DYNAMITE as their love story....

I still can't get over how amazing and beautiful her dress was! All the staff at TCP couldn't stop talking about it.

Pictures like these are truly my favorite because they catch the most beautiful moments of the day!

Piper's colors were a rich purple and blue and white which was an amazing combo! plus, I love all the orchids which were incorporated in everything.

She decided to mix things up and do a cupcake cake which looked adorable and was a hit with guests! It just shows you that you should choose what you love best!

I have to give a big shout out to the talented Revenberg Photography who took these beautiful and unique pictures. And I am proud to say their wedding was even featured on UtahBrideBlog.com! As usual, thanks to all the amazing vendors who do such a great job at making every wedding unique and beautiful. I truly love seeing weddings like this all come together... especially when I get to work with such amazing couples like Piper and John. CONGRATS and may "fireworks" continue to always light up your lives!

The Canterbury Place Wedding Show 2011- Set Table

One of my favorite part of The Canterbury Place's Wedding Show decorations is the set table. The fun thing about a set table is that the setting (the plates, silverware, and napkin) are part of the event's decorations and can bring your vision together.

One fun thing we did at the show was designing with the linens. We used a grey poly-cotton linen for the base with a patterened table runner. Each napkin was an alternating color to create interest. On the chair sashes, we added a mini frame with a silhouette and the guest's name as a place card.

For the flowers, Amanda our in-house florist put mini arrangements in the silver julep cups. Those were alternated with candle sticks running down the table.

For favors, boxes with a black satin bow and a hand-written name card were put on each place setting

Isn't a set-table so gorgeous?!? At The Canterbury Place our dinners are usually served buffet, however any dinner menu item can become a served meal with set tables and service by our waite staff for $2pp. Or, to just add the set tables, but keep the meal served buffet style, the cost is only $1pp. The silverware, plates, and cups shown here are what would be used for your set table.

The Canterbury Place Wedding Show 2011- Flowers

One of the most exciting parts of The Canterbury Place's annual bridal show is the flowers. This year, Amanda Schelin, our amazing in house florist, took the Hollywood Glamour theme to the next level with her floral creations. She created 6 different centerpieces:

This a-symmetrical, dramatic centerpiece was created with our tapered vase turned upside down with the flowers on top

A wreath of roses, tulips, and hydrangea surround two hurricanes

Roses and hydrangea were added to this candlestick. Isn't this a great Victorian centerpiece? I think this look would also work well for vintage themed weddings.

This centerpiece was amazing! The feather details really added a fun/Gothic touch. If you are wanting to make a statement, this would do it.

This is more of a traditional centerpiece- a tight grouping of flowers in a short cylinder.

Amanda also created two amazing flower arrangements for the buffet tables:

The best part of this arrangement was the manzanita branches coming out of the flowers with the crystals hanging. If you love the look of manzanita branches, having them as part of your food buffet is a great more affordable option.

For the floral booth, Amanda created another really cool look (though it's hard to see). She filled tall cylinder glass vases with different colors of water and laid a manzanita branch across the top. She added feathers and crystals for a really abstract look.

If you love these looks, make sure you are doing flowers through The Canterbury Place as Amanda is our in-house florist. Her flowers add so much to every reception and we are thrilled with how everything came together for our show.

Bridal Show 2011- The Decor

Our Bridal Show was two weeks ago, so what better time to reveal some of the gorgeous details that make The Canterbury Place's show unique?!? This week we will show you food, flowers, cake, invitations. Today let's start off with the decor.

One of the unique things about The Canterbury Place is that the feel of our dining hall can be completely changed based on your wedding theme/ colors. We used our theme of Hollywood Glamour and incorporated it with the colors of red, maroon, fuchsia, hot pink, eggplant purple, grey and black. Here is what we came up with:

Isn't the overall room shot amazing?!? For the linens we used some great combinations. We kept everything grounded with a base of grey polyester-cotton. All of the table toppers we alternated with hot pink satin, eggplant purple satin, and purple pin tuck. The sashes were a silver satin tied in a slip knot. For the clouding on the food tables, crushed grey was used.

If these aren't your colors, we have hundreds of options in different colors and textures. For the ceiling decor, we tented the ceiling in black organza for a dramatic effect. In the center of the room, we hung glass vases alternated with crystals.

Here's a close-up, but you really need to see it in real life to understand the beauty. The crystals and glass sparkle in the candle light and have a more modern appeal to them. The cool thing about the glass vases is that flowers can be added (like the orchids above) in addition to colored rocks/beads. Faux tea lights could also be placed in the glass vases for a gorgeous effect.

This ceiling decor is now available for any of our brides- please ask your wedding planner for more details.

To welcome guests into the dining hall, we had a graphic artist design a sign that we put in a big black frame and added flowers around. This idea could easily be adapted to a wedding, with a monogram or welcome to our wedding with the bride and groom's names. This is an inexpensive way to add a big pop of color and customize our hall!

Above our S'more and Hot Cocoa table (more details on that to come with the food post!), we put up a college of frames. The center ornate frame had a monogram with framed fabric (which matched some runners used elsewhere with the decor). The surrounding frames had silhouettes of a bride and groom, love quotes, and beautifully designed labels indicating what was on the tables below. These ideas are a great way to both personalize and brand your wedding while creating decor.

In the ballroom (where the vendors booths were set-up), we hung up our newest color of ceiling swags- grey! On top of the swags we added Italian lights and hung Chinese Lanterns in a variety of colors. This look would be perfect for dancing and is more of a fun look.

Candy Bar Tips

At The Canterbury Place, our favorite favor is the candy bar. Not only it is delicious, but it is also an interactive part of your reception that everyone will love and remember. Below are tips on having a beautiful set-up that is sure to make your guests feel like a kid in a candy store!

1. Color, color, color

Match your candy to your wedding colors to keep a cohesive look. This edited palette will help pull in the look and feel of your wedding. Shades of purple were obviously the colors of this bride's wedding- she picked candy only in those colors and coordinated the color of her table linen (a gorgeous plum crushed table topper) to bring together her elegant reception.

2. Mix-up candy shapes and textures

Keep your candy bar interesting by having a variety of shapes and textures. This bride opted for lolly pops, gum balls, taffy, candy sticks, M&M's, cinnamon bears, and sugared grapefruit. Although she kept all the colors of candy in the pinks and reds, the variation in shapes and sizes creates a beautiful presentation. We suggest purchasing between 5-10 different types of candy to achieve this look. Another trick? Layer different colors of the same candy to create a striped effect in your jars.

3. Accessorize

Just like belts and earrings help make the perfect outfit, ribbon, and labels make the perfect candy bar. Add coordinating ribbon to the tops of your jars and the handles of your scoops. This is a great place to bring in pattern with polka dot ribbon like above. To create a more customized look to your table, add labels to each jar. This is another great way to bring in the feel of your event and easy to design. The labels above were printed on labels purchased from a craft store and applied to hand made pin wheels. Another tip? Create a sticker to use to close the candy bag. Monograms as well as a quick "thank you" both work well.

4. Use Cute Containers

At The Canterbury Place we have a good selection of containers. Our favorites are Apothecary jars in a variety of heights. Mixing in smaller containers and trays works nicely too. We also suggest being inspired by your centerpieces- square vase on your tables? Incorporate square vases onto your candy bar table too. The bride above mixed her candy in with her desserts for more of a sweets table. It was a great idea and a perfect choice if you are on a budget with your candy as you can buy less when it is displayed this way.

5. Don't forget the Details!

Bags and scoops are 100% necessary for a functioning candy bar. Don't forget something to keep the bags closed- twist ties or stickers work nicely for this.

The Canterbury Place Holiday Hours

We wanted to share some pictures from a fall-colored event The Canterbury Place hosted a few summers ago as we prepare for Thanksgiving.

This event was all about customizing- we rented in the square tables and plates for the bride (an option we can do for any event if square tables are preferred to our standard rounds). The flowers were provided by The Canterbury Place's florist, Stacie from La Belle Fleur and incorporated the fall tones. The amazing cake was made by our preferred cake artist, Heather from Ambrosia Cakes.

We also wanted to mention our Holiday Hours for the remainder of the year:

Featured Wedding: Adrienne + Philip

I am thrilled to finally get to show off Adrienne (aka: AJ) & Philip's darling wedding that was here at The Canterbury Place last May! I couldn't resist throwing in some of their engagements too because they are so incredibly adorable and creative! I love it when couples incorporate something meaningful to them in their engagement pictures. Hats off to Chad Braithwaite with Faces Photography for capturing their day so perfectly!

Hmmm? I wonder which team the Groom is a fan of?

Who says a groom can't have his own cake and eat it too?

Adrienne's wedding colors were light green and brown which was such a fresh and fun combo! I love how they incorporated the colors into every detail from the home made ring pillow down to their matching shoes!

So i know I overuse this word, but I don't know what else to say than simply....

ADORABLE!

Now that I have learned how to Blog (welcome to the 20th century Elysha) I have been a blogging machine lately! haha. But I can't help it because I am so excited to finally show off all of our amazing weddings this last summer. And this wedding so happens to be one of them! LeAnn and Brad had a luncheon, ceremony & reception with us last May and I truly had a blast planning with them! The details came together perfectly... just like they did when they first met and fell in love...

They chose the classic and timeless color scheme of Red, Black & White (who says you can't do your favorite colors any time of year?). Roses and white cala lilies were her flower of choice and I love how our in house florist Stacie with La Belle Fleur added some modern elements to the bouquets with some black feathers, fern curls & strings of pearls. Dynamite!

Oh how I adore the wisteria draped arch in May!

MMMM... this cake it perfect in every way! Layers cakes again produces pure perfection... and I love the added broach detail on the bottom.

Of course I have to give a big shout out to the oh so talented Lindsay Jane Photography who captured every detail and moment of this wedding perfectly!

Sneek Peek: 2011 Bridal Show Photo Shoot

Bridal Show season is right around the corner and I am so excited give you a sneak peek at these fabulous pictures that one of our preferred photographers Dustin Izatt shot for us just the other day here at The Canterbury Place for our own bridal show coming up in January.

Notice her Hollywood inspired black feathered headband. Many brides this year are opting for a hair piece instead of the traditional bridal veil and I am loving it! Plus, you can even just make it yourself if you are looking to save on costs.

Our in house florist Amanda Schelin with Branches Floral designed this dynamite posy style bouquet. The bouquet consisted of roses, dahlias, tulips, mini callas, rannunculus and one of personal favorites anemones. What's even more fabulous is the added details of the feathers and a ruby jewel on the handle.

(Hmmm... our model looks familiar?)

An April Wedding with Love birds Lindsay & Mike

I knew from the start that Lindsay and Mike were incredibly in love and I also knew I was going to have so much fun planning their special day... qnd they didn't disappoint in the slightest! Their story began when they first met at work, then they both went their seperate way until they reconnected 3 years later. He of course never forgot her and we can't blame him... she is absolutely gorgeous! And I found out, equally as sweet!

Mike & Lindsay had a daytime event which is a great option for brides who want to save some money and want a more casual feel to their wedding.

They wanted a very clean and elgant feel to their wedding so the use of the black cala lily (one of my personal favorites flowers) was a key element throughout the decor.

Summer Wedding with Tracy & Nick

Tracy & Nick got married here at The Canterbury Place over a year ago, and they are such a gorgeous couple I couldn't wait to show off their amazing wedding! It took some pateince, but it was well worth it because their edited pictures turned out amazing! I hope you all enjoy these as much as I did...

Chinese Lanterns in her wedding colors were strung all over the arch and hung on the chairs. For some added fun, hand made cups of rose petals were hung on the chairs for guests to throw as the newly married couple walked back down the isle!

Every Detial from a Photo Booth, incredible Florals, perfect Cake, Guitar Hero Groom's Cake, more Lanterns, and even chair signs for the married couple, came together perfectly!

Groomals with Lindsay Jane Photography

A few weeks ago, Lindsay Jane Photography held part of their boot camp at The Canterbury Place (this is an awesome program they do to teach people how to take beautiful pictures - for more info click here)! They invited a gorgeous couple, Dave and Allison, to be their models. These pictures are similar to Groomals- beautiful pictures before the wedding day in your dress/suit without the stress (it’s a great alternative to bridals and most couples find they use these pictures even more than bridals). We were so excited when Lindsay Jane Photography asked to use The Canterbury Place as a backdrop since we knew we would have beautiful pictures to share. Major League Weddings with Laughing Gravy

More Chivari Chair Decorations!

At The Canterbury Place we love our chivari chairs because they are so easy to decorate! We have posted many ideas for decorating them (see them here, here, and here) and have more for you today:

How cute are these over sized rosettes? They definitely make a statement.

Tips on Choosing your Ceremony Music

One of the most common questions I receive as a wedding planner at The Canterbury Place is what music to use for a ceremony? My first answer to this is to choose music that is special to you as a couple because this is what makes your day memorable. Music sets the tone and mood for your wedding and allows you to express your feelings for each other so don’t be afraid to be creative. But if narrowing down the selection is still posing a challenge, here are some suggestions for you:

The Processional: This is the song that the bridal party will be walking down to. Using something simple and steady like “Canon in D’” or “Trumpet Voluntary” are good traditional songs.

The Bride: The traditional bride song is “Here Comes the Bride”, but as more wedding traditions are going out the window, so are traditional wedding songs. Again, play something special to you and something that reflects your personality.

The Recessional: You’re married! So now it is time to have fun and that jubilant feeling should translate into the music as guests leave. Choices like “The Wedding March” and “Ode to Joy” are classics. You can also opt for something more modern like Michael Buble’s “For Once in My Life” or the Beatles “All You Need is Love.” This is also your chance to add in your personality! If you both have a special song, play it for the recessional.

One of our preferred vendors, Polka Dots and Daisies, premiered some new invitations at our bridal show this year. We love Polka Dots and Daisies because of their fresh look and the fact that they are so customizable! You can change the color, the font, and even the motif! Every invitation is unique and Mollie (the owner of Polka Dots and Daisies) has designed them so beautifully.

Becky and Jeff, Wedding at The Canterbury Place

For all of our spring brides, I wanted to post these gorgeous photos from Becky and Jeff's wedding that was held last May at The Canterbury Place. Becky's colors were pink, green, ivory and black. Her bouquet had a beautiful mixture of pink roses and peonies- perfect for the spring. Stacie (the florist at The Canterbury Place) incorporated cherry blossoms into her large ceremony arrangements that beautifully captured the season and the wedding colors.

Becky and Jeff had a served dinner for 100 guests. The best thing about served dinners? The beautifully set tables before hand.

Lindsay and George

I am so excited to be sharing the lovely pictures from this wedding today! We actually showed the wedding video by Nathan Pickett Films here and now we are so excited to have the pictures of this great event at The Canterbury Place!

Lindsay and George had their ceremony and reception here in early November 2009. We worked on planning this event for a year and I loved every minute I spent with Lindsay, George and her mom Jean. They cared about making every detail perfect and it showed- the wedding and reception were amazing.

We actually received a surprise snow storm that day, but it just made the outside pictures that much prettier! Lindsay's colors were plum, rust, and mustard- deep fall tones. The flowers were gorgeous. They were made by The Canterbury Place's florist Stacie. Every arrangement had amazing textures and colors- they were truly breathtaking! For dinner there was a amazing dinner buffet for the many guests. The best part of the evening was the dancing, it was a huge party and everyone had a blast!

New Preferred Vendor: Aesthetic Artistry

Last Thursday we had the privilege of having Terri Anne and Jennae from Aesthetic Artistry come and do a hair and make up demonstration on Elysha (our beautiful model/ wedding planner). Aesthetic Artistry is The Canterbury Place's new preferred vendor for hair and make up.

We were blown away with the amazing job these ladies did! Terri Anne is amazing at the air brush make up and Jennae did a great up-do on Elysha.

Elysha looked amazing! Her cheek bones were defined and her eyes were gorgeous.

They did the demonstration in our Bride's Room. It worked perfectly, especially since they will do on location hair and make-up at The Canterbury Place!

They specialize in total make-overs for brides. From hair-extensions to Terri Anne's own skin care line these ladies will work with you to get your skin, hair, and body perfect for your big day! They work with brides 3-4 months before the wedding, and the results are beautiful!

Bridal Show Rundown: A Beautifully Set Table

For today's post I will be showing off one of my favorite parts of The Canterbury Place's Wedding Show- the set table! We did a mock set-up that featured everything from place cards, menus, to favors. Here are the details:

For the place cards we purchased cards from the local craft store and added some fun elements of pink labels and a mini pink flowers. We hand wrote the name of each of our "guests" with their table number written on the inside. Because place cards can't be made until a few weeks before the wedding (when all of the RSVP's are collected), a lot of brides leave this to the last minute. But you can easily purchase and embellish the cards and then write the names on them later

For the favor board, we covered a bulletin board with a coordinating striped fabric (for a great visual effect). We collected candy in pink tones and then placed them in mini cellophane bags. For the finishing touch, we purchased some darling labels and added on a monogram- TCP for The Canterbury Place. When the bags were finished, we pinned them onto the board so that guests could take a favor when they found their place card.
The set table was divine! We used a buffet table for the set table- this is a great way to do a served meal of a budget. Why? Because 8-10 people sit at one table so your linens and flowers go farther than on a round table (which usually seats 6-7 guests). We did something a little different and placed the cake in the middle as a centerpiece. The flowers were minimal- but simple and sweet. For the place setting we used The Canterbury Place dishes and stemware- so if you are having a served dinner here, you can see how beautiful our place settings are!

One of the fun things we did at this show was incorporate a lot of pattern! The table linen we selected was an ivory stripe. On top of it we added 3 hand crafted table runners for that bold punch of pattern.

For each place setting we had a dinner menu that was designed for the show. This is a great idea that any bride can incorporate! It's a great way to both "brand" your wedding and let your guests know what their next course will be. The menu was tucked inside of an ivory napkin with a band of ribbon and a paper flower used as trim.

On the corner of the windows we added these paper lanterns (more pattern!)

and mini poms.

For the centerpiece we used a cake that was created by one of our preferred cake artists Julie Hill from Layers Cake. I was inspired by this cake. So I sent her a picture, I told her my general vision, and I let her run with it. I was so happy with they way the cake turned out! The icing work on the second layer is amazing and the broach on the top tier is made from sugar. Bridal Show Rundown: Candy Bar

The Candy Bar at our Bridal Show was amazing! The Canterbury Place's Catering team did a great job of combining many "favorite" candies in our bridal show colors to create that kid in a candy shop feeling. And it sure was a crowd pleaser! Our guests loved helping themselves to their favorite candy to either eat right away or to take home and enjoy.
At The Canterbury Place we offer our candy bars at $200 per 100 guests. This is definitely the best favor choice out there! It is easy to incorporate your colors and guests always love to have an interactive part of the reception (believe me, it is something that they will remember).

The setup we featured at the show can also be used at your wedding (or you can come up with your own idea)- we used our apothecary jars decorated with ribbon in the bridal show colors. We added labels that looked like medallions by handcrafting pinwheels and adding on a printed circle label (which you can purchase from craft stores).

Bridal Show Rundown: Food

I hope that everyone is loving our bridal show features! Today we are showing off the food that was provided by The Canterbury Place Catering department. Our Chef, Tish, did an amazing with incorporating the theme Vintage Chic into beautiful and delicious food.

Every year, we show a new way to have your buffet table. This year, we featured a six foot round in the center of the Historic Dining Hall. This round is available for every bride to use and is great for creating an amazing focal point in the center of the room.

Half of the buffet table was dedicated to desserts. Our desserts included lemon bar and brownie stacks with adorable garnishes.

and Chocolate Nut Cups

The other half of the table featured every one's favorite: hors d'oeuvres! The Canterbury Place has two menus with hors d'oeuvres, and all of the food items at the Show are now available on our menus.

This year we had Mini Beef Wellington

Coconut Shrimp with Mango Salsa

Filo Blue Cheese with Pear

And Sausage and Mushroom Bites.

Because we had so many new hors d'oeuvres, we wrote our menu on a chalk board.

So many of our brides loved this idea and wanted to use it for their own wedding! So we are making it available for rent for weddings.

The price is $15.00 and it will have your menu written on it. This is a perfect way to let your guests know what amazing food they will be having!

We hope that everyone who joined us enjoyed the delicious food! For our next feature we will be showing the decedant Candy Buffet that was also created by our Catering team. Check back soon!

Bridal Show Rundown: Ceiling Decor

At The Canterbury Place, one of our favorite things is to decorate the ceiling! And why not? The ambiance is amazing when you extend your decorations from floor to ceiling! Our original ceiling swags created the perfect tenting effect, so we decided to double the effect with lights in every swag. The effect was perfect, and there was still room in the center for hanging Tissue Poms. These are adorable because they give the feeling of hanging flowers, but bigger and less expensive! This was our first time featuring the Tissue Poms at a show, and we are sure that many brides will love this look (it's much softer and more feminine than Chinese Lanterns, so it's the perfect look for a Vintage look)! The Poms come in many colors, and each one has a slightly different petal, giving it a unique texture.

The Fully Lit Ceiling Swags we featured are available for $550.00 in Ivory or $700.00 in a custom color. Of course, our original Ceiling Swags are still available at $350.00. The Dining Hall ceilings are very tall, so these give the room a more intimate feel. And with all of the lights, it really is magical!

Upgrading the ceiling decor every year is something that we really enjoy! In the Ballroom, Elysha came up with the idea to hang Chinese Lanterns along Italian Lights. This is a very versatile look because you can just do the Chinese Lanterns, or have it with 1/2 swags (as shown) or with full swags! It is a great look above the dance floor, because it gives the feeling of outdoor dancing. Of course, we could also do this same look outside when it is warm enough to do dancing in the courtyard!

Bridal Show Rundown: Florals

The florals for our Bridal Show this year were stunning! Stacie from The Canterbury Place Floral designed and hand crafted every floral piece at the show. If you are interested in having Stacie do your wedding flowers, she is the florist for our packages! Also, if you would like her to do flowers outside of The Canterbury Place, you can check her availability by calling her at 801.510.5764.

At The Canterbury Place's booth, Stacie created mini arrangements in adorable urns.

We featured four different bouquets, this pink and peach toned bouquet had Calla lilies, tulips, and hypericum (how perfect was it in front of our photo station?!?)
On the set table (more pictures of this to come!) we had floral pomander balls sitting right on the tables for a very chic look.

The buffet spray was gorgeous! It was very large and lush with curly willow coming out of the top with roses, peonies, dahlias, and anemones in the bottom. This spray was the perfect focal for our Vintage Chic room!

For our six guest tables, we wanted to show off six different centerpieces. For this table we had a large manzinita branch with tissue flowers and mini birds. The flowers matched the chair sashes and the tissue poms hanging in the center of the room.

This was one of my favorite centerpieces! This twig box was filled with ranunculus and garden roses. The color combination and texture was divine.

Each of our centerpieces was sitting on top of a frame with fabric. These are available for rent- you can either bring in your own fabric or use ours. This is a great way to bring in a punch of color and pattern inexpensively. The peony arrangement was so gorgeous and the juxtaposition between the beautiful flowers and the silver modern vase was perfection.

This centerpiece is a great example of an affordable floral piece with a big look! The lemon slices lined the vase with a carnation pomander on top (who said carnations can't be amazing?).
This last centerpiece was a more modern look. The billy balls were in our newest centerpiece (available with any rental at The Canterbury Place) with a pomander sitting on the side- the perfect simple look!

Bridal Show Rundown: Linens

This year at The Canterbury Place's Bridal Show we had awesome linens (all of which are available to rent through The Canterbury Place)! Here is how we achieved our Vintage Chic theme look through linens:

On the guest tables we had Butter Cream yellow Table Toppers (which are very affordable!).

The head table and buffet tables had Ivory Striped Table Toppers (which are so beautiful).

All of our chivari chairs had our Ivory Chair Cushions and Ivory Organza Sashes. Each set of chairs had chair sashes and were tied in a unique way. Sashes are a great way to add color and personality to a room on a budget- they start at $1.50 per chair and can be tied in a variety of ways. At the show we featured our sashes with many different decorations. On the opi chair sash (the newest way to tie sashes!) we added a napkin holder. This same look can be achieved with a broach.

On the Criss-Crossed tied sash we added a mini tissue pom. These are available through The Canterbury Place at $1.00 per chair in your wedding colors. This is a very feminine look and perfectly matches our tissue poms that hang from the ceiling (more pictures of this to come).
On The Loop tied sash, we added a beautiful crystal. These are also available to rent at $1.00 per chair. In candle light, these will really glitter and add a touch of elegance to the room.
On the Slip-Knot tied sash, we added a fabric flower. If you find something that you would like to add to your sashes, you can bring it in and do it yourself, or you can hire The Canterbury Place's set-up team to do it at $0.25-$0.75 a chair (the price depends on time needed to attach, please ask your wedding planner for a personalized quote).
On the Hanging Knot tied sash, we added a Chinese Lantern Floral Ball. We made these ourselves. While they are very time consuming to make, they are very beautiful and whimsical. For the DIY tips to do it yourself, check out Once Wed's Blog.
On the Cafe tied sashes we added a paper pinwheel. These pinwheels are a great way to add pattern and color to the sash.
And on the Knot we added a fresh floral. Please contact your florist on pricing for this option.

Planning a bridal show is very fun in the fact that you get to find the new trends and come up with your own ideas and combine them to have the perfect event!

I can't wait to explain all of the great ideas we came up with (we promise you will be inspired)! There are many affordable ideas and a few DIY ideas. I am still waiting for more photos to do a complete review of the event.

Sneek Peek: Our Bridal Show!

Our Bridal Show was on Saturday. And it turned out so beautiful! Thank you to every who attended! We had a great turnout. Megan and Brad's Wedding

Megan and Brad were married at The Canterbury Place recently! They had a beautiful wedding and a darling story that we would like to share with you!

Megan and Brad met when she was 14 and he was 15 at a school stomp. When she saw Brad she thought he was “really cute but out of [her] league,” so she actually ended up dating his best friend! Later on, when he came home from school at Utah state, they rekindled their friendship and ended up dating.

Megan said poor Brad tried to propose several times! But “he ended up doing it on the 24th of July while [they] were watching all of Salt Lake’s fireworks from above. [They] had hiked up a trail to the top of the mountain and could see the whole valley.”

Here are a few details from their fabulous wedding:

Wedding Date: October 8, 2009. The leaves outside were a perfect red, which made for amazing pictures!

Venue: The Canterbury Place

Wedding Song: They started off with a slow song, but it went into the song “Shake It” by Metro Station, which was their actual song.

Wedding Colors: Megan and Brad chose black and gold for their colors, which was an absolutely stunning palette!

Theme: They wanted everything to be very classy and elegant.

Special Touches/ Décor Elements: Megan and Brad had beautiful gold organza chair sashes tied in a bow on every chair. It was a perfect way to incorporate the gold!
For the ceremony, they also tied a single red rose with black ribbon at the end of each chair, which made for a very romantic look.

Most memorable moment for the Bride: “Standing at the bottom of the stairs of the brides room waiting for my dad to come get me. I was so excited! And before that, all my bridesmaids and I were standing at the bottom and I heard Brad and his grooms come up the stairs. He heard me and said "Hi babe, I love you!" so I said “Hi” back and told him I loved him too. It was so calming to know he was ready.”

Most memorable moment for the Groom: “He says it was ‘seeing my beautiful bride walk down the isle towards me, because I was really, really nervous!’ Then, after the wedding we went to Wendy’s in my tux and her dress, because that’s what the wife wanted.”

Pictures from our last Bridal Show!

Every year The Canterbury Place hosts a bridal show. This is one of our biggest and most exciting events of the year! Why? Because we bring together some of Utah's best vendors for you to meet with and we do a mock reception set-up for one purpose- to inspire you as you plan your wedding! To get you excited for this year's show (we have so many great ideas to show you- we can't wait!) we wanted to share some pictures from our 2009 Bold and Beautiful Wedding Show.

This show was really fun because we incorporated lots of new ideas. The stage looked amazing with a custom monogram, hanging lanterns, and florals. All items that you see are available for rent at your wedding!

The dessert table showed off the adorable cake in the middle (by Ambrosia Wedding Cakes) with large balloons above and many delicious petite desserts below. This look is really easy to replicate for your reception! (How cute would those balloons look with a candy bar or along a head table ?!?)

The desserts are both delicious and beautiful!

The drink station featured three different flavors of water and beautiful florals by The Canterbury Place florist.

We featured a new way to hang ceiling swags and this was also the first event where we hung Chinese Lanterns! The lanterns create a fun/modern look and are available in almost every color.

We showed off linens available for rent and new ways to use them (including 6 new ways to tie our Chavari chair sashes)!

Every table had a different floral centerpiece by The Canterbury Place florist. If you haven't met our florist yet, this is a great time to come in and see her amazing talent!

And for most people, the best part of the show is eating all of the great food! Brides love taste testing what might be served at their own receptions and we feature many new menu items every year.

So if you are interested in having your event at The Canterbury Place this is a great time to come in and see all that we have to offer! Or if you are a bride needing inspiration (even if you are not having your reception with us), please come anyway!

The Wedding Day Timeline

When you are planning your wedding day, there are lots of things to consider as far as the timeline goes. Every bride has a list of the things she wants to do, including the traditions like cutting the cake, the first dance, etc. Brides are often at a loss, however, as to when they should do what! So here are some recommendations based on our experience here at The Canterbury Place:

1.) If you are having your ceremony and your reception at the same venue, try not to leave too much time between the two. This way, your guests won’t have to leave and then come back, or be bored while waiting around for the reception to begin.

2.) The ideal time for toasts depends on what kind of food you are serving. If you are having a served meal, you can do toasts during salads or dessert. If you’re food is buffet style, then you could toast right before you cut the cake.

3.) The best time to cut the cake is probably right in the middle of the reception. That is when the greatest amount of people are most likely to be there.

4.) We recommend doing the first dance right after the cake cutting! That way, you already have everybody’s attention. The first dance is also the perfect way to initiate the rest of the dancing.

.) The bouquet and garter toss are a great way to wrap things up! It gives your guests the sense that the evening is coming to an end. In addition, after the tosses, while you have everyone’s attention, you can announce where the send of will be so everyone can gather while you change or get the things you need.

As the bride, it will be easy for you to lose track of time. Find a family member or someone who will be willing to be in charge of the “schedule” and will come get you when it’s time to cut the cake, toss the bouquet, etc. At The Canterbury Place, we have a hostess who will handle that for you.
Above all, remember that it’s your day! Go with the flow, and if you get a little bit behind on the timeline, don’t panic! The most important thing is that you have the time to enjoy yourself and your guests.

Wedding Registry 101

Registries are no longer about china patterns and gravy boats. More and more couples are throwing expectations to the wind and are registering with retailers that reflect their lifestyle more than their Tupperware drawer. While it’s your big day, it’s important to consider your guests while putting together your gift registry. Here are some registry ideas and common registry etiquette to help you along the way (also, the pictures show you different options for listing your registry on your invitations).

If you are an adventurous couple, a fun idea is to contact a travel agent who can price out various activities like a couples massage, jet-ski rides, or dinner for two, thereby allowing your guests to choose what portion of the honeymoon they would like to contribute or “gift”. There are many great websites appearing like http://www.thehoneymoon.com/, which give your guests many fun options to contribute to. If you are an outdoorsy couple, a fun idea is to register for a series of pursuit-based activities like ski lessons, dance classes, or horseback riding. Sport retailers like http://www.rei.com/ now have an easy-to-use online and store gift registries so you can get that high-tech hiking gear you’ve been dreaming about!

If you are a couple that has already established a home and you are hoping for monetary gifts which would be more useful to you than a traditional wedding gift, there are still options for you. How to request money as a wedding gift remains one of the most challenging etiquette issues. Although you can find many clever poems and advice online on how to ask for cash, please keep in mind that guests will appreciate (and are likely to feel more comfortable) giving a “cash-like” gift if they know how their gift will be spent. Many still feel it is bad etiquette to mention cash altogether. For this reason, we recommend taking advantage of registries like Home Depot for home improvement items. Another common trend that many credit unions and banks have now started offering are wedding registry accounts that your guests can contribute to online. There are even great websites like http://www.ourwishingwell.com/ that offer a FREE, quick, and easy online option for a gift registry!
Department stores and home décor registries still hold their functional allure because many guests like to gift what is familiar and easily accessible. Conventional registries like Crate & Barrell, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Target remain the most popular because of their familiarity, their stylish lines and options of décor, and their great return policies. They also give your guests a wide range of options for a wide range of budget points, which is a very important key factor to remember.

Although registries continue to change and evolve, everyone has different ideas of what makes an appropriate wedding gift, so don’t be surprised if you still get the occasional personal or homemade gift. Remember, the gift giver is ultimately in charge of what you receive, while your job is simply to write a kind thank-you note.

Finding a Wedding Dress to Fit Your Body Type

One of the biggest decisions you will make on your wedding day is what dress to get! A dress can be very tricky, because all though there may be certain styles that you love, it may not necessarily be the most flattering for your body type. So, The Canterbury Place did some research that we hope will help you to find your perfect dress!

Pear Shaped Brides.
An A-line skirt that gradually flares out will help you to appear to your best advantage. Your dress should highlight your mid-section and flow away from your hips and thighs. A ball gown can also work for this body type. As for the upper body, spaghetti straps and a V neckline will help to accentuate a slender upper body. Avoid slim silhouettes or heavy ornamentation in the hip area, as well as sheath gowns.

Busty
Scoop and square enhance the “bustiness”. Corsets can work wonders with helping to slenderize the upper body. Also, find a dress with far-apart straps. You may need to avoid strapless as this could cause some bulging. Avoid cinched waists and empire styles.

Plus-Sized.
An empire waisted dress is going to be ideal (skirt begins under the bust and flares out gradually until floor length). Make sure the seam does not lay ON the bust; it must be underneath. You don’t want the fabric of your dress to be TOO loose, because this could actually add pounds. Thus, you should avoid fabrics that are too flowy.

Apple Shaped
A dress that cinches the smallest point of the waist line and then an a-line skirt looks great on this body type. The dress should have a lot of texture and fit snugly so that it acts like a corset. Dropped V waist dresses can also be very flattering. On the bodice, go for a deep V neckline so that you have a vertical rather than horizontal look. Avoid mermaid style, heavy materials, clinging materials, or bold patterns. Vertical beading cane help to elongate the body.

Hour Glass Shape
Two piece and corset dresses are fabulous! Girls with an hour glass shape can also pull off ball gowns. Accentuate your waist! Do not put too much detail in the bodice or skirt, as this will make you appear heavy.

Petite
Do not use ball gowns or mermaid dresses, as these can overwhelm you. You want it to be clean, without too much fabric. Seams or appliqués that run the length of the dress will help give the illusion of height, whereas a dropped waist will make you look even shorter.

Broad Shouldered
Stay away from halter and off the shoulder necklines. These accentuate the shoulders. Go for strapless dresses with scoop or V necklines.

Fuller Arms
Off-the-shoulder straps can help to hide the problem area. A three quarter length or long sleeve can elongate the arm. Avoid tightness as all costs!

Stick figures
Avoid high waist lines! Ornamentation on both the upper and lower body will help provide balance.

So…who can do mermaid?
If you’ve been working out and have a great shape and want to show off your body, then you can pull of the mermaid. Especially if you have really small hips. Bear in mind, this is an unforgiving style and will accentuate rather than hide problem areas. If you are petite, thick or short waisted, or pear shaped, this is probably not the best style for you.

Make sure you take some friends and family members (especially ones that will be honest!) shopping with you. When I went wedding dress shopping, I gave my friends these strict instructions: “No matter how much I love a dress, you HAVE to tell me if it just doesn’t look good on me.” On your wedding day, you don’t just want a beautiful dress; you want a dress that will make YOU appear to your best advantage. The wedding dress is just like a frame that highlights a gorgeous painting. Above all, don’t get too stressed out! Wedding dress shopping should be fun! Happy hunting!

The Best of Bountiful Award!

The Canterbury Place is excited to announce that we won the Best of Bountiful 2009 award for Decoration Service! We are beyond thrilled to win this award and are excited that we have been recognized for helping bride's create beautiful weddings.

Because we won this great award, I thought I would show our blog readers a few of my favorite weddings where the decorations were truly amazing and captured the bride's inspiration.

Irma's wedding colors were strictly ivory. She wanted everything elegant and I think that we achieved it! All of the linens were crushed pearl with compact centerpieces of lilies and hydrangea. The only thing not ivory in her wedding were the red rose petals down the aisle for the ceremony (very romantic). Other ceremony decorations included draped silk organza with floral arrangements on the aisle chairs and topping off the beautiful arch in the courtyard with a spray of lilies.

Mandy's wedding was all about the inspiration. She brought in pictures of everything that she wanted to achieve and we executed her ideas into reality. Mandy actually rented in square tables to create a strong geometric look. The linens were absolutely beautiful- the satin chocolate toppers with cranberry satin runners and folded napkins were the perfect pops of color against the ivory linen base and organza chair sashes. All of her flowers were reds, browns, and ivories except her bouquet which were soft peaches (and one my favorite bouquets of all time)! Her ceremony chairs were accented with flower pomanders that were later moved into the dining hall as decoration on the sconces. My favorite decorative element were the amazingly full centerpieces. They were so pretty and the perfect combination of textures.

Maria's wedding was actually themed- a pear theme to be exact. This one was executed very tastefully; all of the colors in the linens (a beautiful gold brocade), flowers, and attendants attire reflected the golds and greens in pears. The guestbook was a pear jar with notes on why Mark and Maria were the "perfect pair." The cake had beautiful dogwood and sugar pears and the centerpieces were golden pears (which the guests really enjoyed eating)!

Tracey's wedding colors were plum, lavender, and black and her look was modern dramatic. She came in with pictures of how she wanted to decorate the arch- we were worried about the lanterns swaying in the wind, but they ended up being the perfect backdrop for the ceremony and pictures afterwards. For her place cards, she had two large manzanita branches with crystals and mini Chinese lanterns with the place cards hanging from ribbon. The dining hall had beautifully dramatic black ceiling swags with the monochromatic Chinese lanterns. The satin plum sashes were the perfect pop against the black linens and the centerpieces were a mini version of the place card arrangements.

Tips for the Wedding Day

1.) Plan appointments out well. Be generous in the amount of time you give yourself to get from place to place. Delays happen, and if you gave yourself wiggle room to begin with, it won’t be a problem when they come up.

2.) Pack a little emergency bag the night before: bobby pins, sewing kits, hairspray, touch-up make-up, more comfortable shoes in case your heels start to kill you… That way, if any glitches pop up, you’ll be good to go.

3.) Don’t be afraid to recruit family members’ and friends’ help! You can assign several different people things to remember so no one has too much on their plates. That’s what maids of honors and bridesmaids are for!

4.) Make sure you have something to eat before the reception! There is a good chance that you won’t be able to eat for awhile.
5.) Make sure you take the time to eat something at your reception! You’ve been planning and talking about this food for months, and you deserve to have some! If you absolutely don’t have time, have a family member or the caterers make up a box that you can take with you.

6.) Make sure you set aside plenty of time to take pictures. These are what will stay with you forever, and you will never regret the extra time you allotted to take them.

7.) Put your honeymoon luggage in the trunk of your getaway car the night before so you won’t even have to think about it the next day! If you are making your getaway in a limo or a rented car, then assign a family member to be in charge of the luggage.

8.) Don’t sweat the small stuff. A wedding is a huge event, and there’s bound to be a glitch somewhere. So if you’re brother gets caught in traffic and you have to hold up the ceremony or you get a grass stain on your dress while taking the pictures- just let it go. You want your wedding day to be the happiest, most memorable day of your life and the way to do that is by relaxing, having fun, and not sweating the small stuff.

Kristy + Chris' Wedding at The Canterbury Place

Kristy and Chris were married at The Canterbury Place in August of this year. They are University of Utah fans through and through, so they carried the color scheme into their wedding and the amazing Groom's cake. Both cakes were made by Julie Hill at Layers and she did a great job (her attention to details is amazing)! The beautiful flowers were by our florist Stacie. The weather was perfect for an outdoor ceremony in our courtyard. Later they celebrated and ate from the delicious sandwich bar. We wish Kristy and Chris happiness as newlyweds!

Tips for Invitation Wording

Invitations can be a stressful part of wedding planning. Choosing the wording for the invitation can be especially hard. Here are a few tips from our experience:

Invitation by Polka Dot and Daisies

1.) We don’t recommend putting where you are registered on the invitation if you can help it. The best option is probably to put it on an insert. However, if you are worried about having too many inserts, we recently came across the most classy way we have seen yet. This bride put where she was registered at the very bottom of the invitation, in a lighter, smaller font than all the other wedding invitation wording.
2.) You need to decide on who is announcing you. Is it the bride’s parents? The groom’s parents? Are you announcing yourselves?
3.) You need to decide if everyone is invited to your ceremony, or if you want to keep it more intimate and invite just close friends and family. If this is the case, you need to put just the reception information on the invitation, and put the ceremony information on a separate insert to be mailed to just those invited. If you would like, you can still put on the invitation where you are getting married, but don’t specify a time.
4.) Decide how formal you want to be. For example, do you want to say that your reception starts at “6:00 p.m.” or at “six o’clock in the evening”? Do you want to put “January Eighth Two-Thousand and Ten” or “January 8, 2010”?
5.) You also need to decide how you are putting your names. The proper way is to have the bride’s first and middle name and the groom’s first, middle, and last. Design-wise, there are a couple of things that you can do. Do you want to make your names bigger than the rest of the wording so that they stand out? Do you want the names to be in a different font?

Ashley + Dan's Wedding at The Canterbury Place

Last June we had the cutest vintage themed wedding at The Canterbury Place! The bride's colors were a purple, peach, buttery yellow, red, and brown. Wow! As you can see from the pictures our florist did a great job incorporating everything together. Pay special attention to the groom's boutonniere- it is very unique. I absolutely loved the cake which was inspired by a Martha Stewart cake. The china on the cake was also used for the centerpieces and was actual china from her grandmother. What a great way to bring tradition into your day! Everyone had a great time dancing and eating from the delicious crepe buffet. Enjoy these pictures, we hope that they will inspire you for your wedding!

Tips on Touring Reception Centers

When you want to tour a reception center, it’s a great idea to call ahead. This allows the reception center to be prepared and available for you upon your arrival. When you make your appointment, also ask them to check your date for you to be sure that day hasn’t been booked already.

Before your tour, it is important for you to know some key elements about your event. This will allow the reception center to give you more accurate pricing. For example, it’s very important to have an estimate of your guest count, and to know what you want in terms of catering (i.e. desserts, deli buffet, served meal, etc). It’s always a good idea to know your budget, as well. That way, as you look at the pricing, you will know whether or not it’s something that can work for you. If it’s not in your budget, it doesn’t have to end there! Ask the reception center what they can do to accommodate your budget. Most places, including The Canterbury Place, will be more than happy to work with you!

We recommend bringing your fiancé and the person who is responsible for paying for the event on your tour, since they will be very involved in the event as well!

There are several important questions to ask on the tour. These include:

How many people can you accommodate?
Do you charge service charges and gratuity?
Are there any fees I should be aware of (i.e. cake cutting fees, cleaning fees)?
What are your linen options?
What are your bar policies?
What are the hours on the building rental?
Will other parties also be in the building during my event?
Can I bring in my own vendors?
What is the deposit, and what are the policies relating to it (i.e. is it refundable or transferable?

Through out your tour, don’t simply look at the building. Try to visualize your wedding there. Buildings are truly transformed with décor, so you have to use your imagination. It’s also a good idea to ask the venue if they can show you some pictures of past events. This will help you to get an idea of what they are capable of as far as décor is concerned.

After your tour, we encourage you to make your decision as soon as possible. Reception centers book very quickly, and you don’t want your date to get taken!

Look How Far We've Come!

The Canterbury Place reception center was originally built as a chapel in 1914.
As one of Bountiful’s oldest buildings, many residents can remember worshipping

here until 1955 when it was no longer used as a church.

In 1981 the property was first utilized as a reception center. The building was purchased by the Butler family and hosted many wedding ceremonies and receptions.

In 2004, the current owner’s wife began working at The Canterbury Place and fell in love with the building. When she discovered that it was for sale, she begged her husband to purchase it. Together they bought the property and undertook a multi-million dollar renovation to restore its vintage charm.

The building was purchased in December of 2004 by the current owners, making this month their 5 year anniversary of owning this beautiful building!

To celebrate, I found some old pictures of the building that really show off the beautiful renovation:

Flowers as Focals

Recently at The Canterbury Place, we’ve had some pretty fabulous florals that we’d like to share with you! Our premier vendor, Stacie, of La Belle Fleur truly out-does herself every time!

Your flowers should be one of the focals of your event; your main décor even. These brides definitely felt that way! While they used fabulous linens, they kept them all very neutral, so the brightest colors in their scheme manifested themselves only in their flowers. Essentially, the linens acted as a frame to their most exquisite décor. One thing we’ve definitely found with planning weddings is that you don’t need to splash all of your colors everywhere. It’s good to have a base color, and then put your boldest colors where they will really pop, such as in stunning florals.

How to Get a Marriage License

You go to receive your marriage license at the county clerk's office. The marriage license is only valid for 30 days, so make sure that you don’t go more than a month before your wedding date.
You do not have to be a resident of Utah to get a marriage license in Utah. Most counties in Utah, however, will require that both of you be present to get the license. When you get there, you will be asked to present a form of I.D. This could be a driver’s license, a passport, or a birth certificate. You will also be asked your social security number, your parents’ names (including your mother’s maiden name), parents’ birthplaces, and your permanent addresses.
You can expect the cost to be between $45-50. Generally, in Utah, you do not need to expect a waiting period, but we recommend going about a month before in case any complications do present themselves, and so you can get it done and have one less thing to worry about in the weeks leading up to your wedding!

Every year The Canterbury Place hosts a wedding show to showcase the newest wedding ideas for 2010. This year we are centering the show around a Vintage Chic theme. We will have a full reception set up (flowers, cake, decor, food) to give brides (you!) inspiration. We will even be featuring ideas for brides on a budget! Amazing vendors will be there for you to meet and begin planning your wedding with. We will have great food, drawings, and much more.

Bridals are a trend that have been incorporated into the wedding “must-haves” for quite some time now…and for good reason. First of all, it allows you to show off your amazing wedding dress for years to come. Second of all, it gives you the chance to wear the most expensive piece of clothing you will probably ever buy more than once. We love it when a bride brings in a big 16x20 of pure fabulousness.

Something that has recently become more popular, however, is groomals, where the bride and the groom both pose for pictures together before the wedding day. In the past, this has been out-of-the-question for most brides, due to the tradition that the bride does not want the groom to see her in her dress before the wedding day. But with the dawn of the 21st century well behind us, we will be seeing many of our traditions changing, and beginning new ones of our own! Groomals are a new institution that we love.

You will be absolutely blown away by the beauty and quality of his films. He is amazing at combining music with beautifully edited pieces of film that capture the emotion and atmosphere of the day. He has an office right around the corner with us and shares the space with Lindsay Jane Photography.

Just a few weeks ago, Nate was filming a wedding at The Canterbury Place and edited a video for our office to see- we all fell in love!
